Westchester County Airport

Westchester White Plains Airport (HPN, KHPN) is a general aviation and commercial airport, and the first scheduled flights occurred in 1949 from Westchester to LaGuardia. Approximately one million passengers are currently passing through the commercial gates of Westchester White Plains Airport today.

The Westchester County Airport is approximately 30 miles north of Manhattan, providing quick access to NYC and communities in upper Manhattan and western Connecticut. With direct charter flights available for HPN, Westchester County Airport is an obvious choice for VIP travelers flying out of White Plains or the surrounding area. 75% of the current aviation traffic in and out of KHPN is general aviation. These range from single engines and turboprops to charter light, mid, heavy jets, luxury airliners, and corporate jet airliners.

About Westchester County Airport

Westchester County Airport is county-owned and serves Westchester, a northern suburb of New York City, and Fairfield County, Connecticut, as the New York-Connecticut state border concurs with the airport‘s eastern boundary. HPN is 3 miles northeast of downtown White Plains, NY, in West Harrison. The airport serves the counties of Westchester, New York, and Fairfield, Connecticut. It is also a reliever airport for the New York area, as it’s about 33 miles north of Midtown Manhattan.

Westchester County Airport was initially opened during World War II as a base for an Air National Guard unit to defend NYC and Rye Lake, part of the 1940s water supply system. The guard unit moved to Stewart Airport, neighboring Orange County, as Westchester grew. Although the airport opened in February 1945, the first commercial aircraft took flight only three years later.

Westchester is unique, and since the 1980s, the County has regulated the flow of commercial aircraft to minimize the impact of aircraft activities on its neighboring communities. Westchester County and the airlines serving the airport operate under a Terminal Capacity Agreement by which a maximum of four out of 6 available gates are to be used. However, this limit is increased during peak holiday travel periods.

As of today, 7 scheduled passenger airlines serve the Westchester County Airport.
