Airport History

The land on which LAX now stands was once a part of the Rancho Sausal Redondo, a large Mexican land grant that existed when California was still a Mexican province. Over the years, the ownership of this land changed hands several times. In 1927, a group of local citizens began to put together the idea of creating a significant airport, and the Los Angeles City Council also started to voice its interest in building a municipal airfield. This led to 640 acres of land being offered as the now LAX.  During that time, William W. Mines was the estate agent representing James Martin, the landowner, which is why the airport was initially known as “Mines Field.” 1941 it became known as Los Angeles Airport, but it was upgraded to the Los Angeles International Airport in 1949.
