Jet Aircraft

A jet aircraft, or simply a jet, is a type of plane that is nearly always a fixed-wing aircraft propelled by jet engines. Flying much faster and at higher elevations than propeller-powered planes, jets can reach as high as 30,000 to 51,000 feet at their maximum altitudes.  Flying at these heights, jet engines achieve their highest efficiency over long-distance flights.

The engines in propeller-powered aircraft,  such as a turboprop, achieve their maximum efficiency at much lower altitudes.  Some business jets can fly at close to the speed of sound, reaching near to Mach 1 at maximum performance.
