History of John Wayne Airport

The land that now makes up John Wayne Airport had its first airstrip built in 1923. It was originally constructed as part of a flying school and began as a simple dirt landing strip. In 1926, the first hangar was erected. As the airfield grew, more hangars were developed and in 1942, the Santa Ana Army Airfield took up residence at the site.

It wasn’t until 1964 that the airport took shape in its now-familiar outline. Two parallel runways built with the original expansion still exist today. This led to the closure of the first flying school in Santa Ana. The airport was originally named Orange County Airport but was later renamed John Wayne Airport in honor of the actor who died in 1979 near Newport Beach.
